Note to vegetarians, vegans, or special diets:
"we always accommodate vegetarians (or any special diets) and have had many happy ones. There are many items on the menu that are vegetarian accompaniments to the dishes (Couscous Salad, Jicama Relish, Ratatouille, Black Beans, Plantains, Papaya Slaw, Black Eyed Peas, Salad, etc...) We use those and make combo plates for vegetarians. We have even accommodated vegans on more than one occasion and they were happy. Most decent restaurants will accommodate special diets, don't let a menu deter you. Thank you for the tip. BTW: the Grilled Halloumi is vegetarian ;^)
Note to seekers and followers of unusual items:
To those of you that have followed us for years for "special" stuff, you know who you are, we DO stock those even though you don't see them on the menu!"

TRANSLATIONS/DESCRIPTIONS

small plates
Smoked Salmon Roesti- pronounced roshte or rooshtee, roestie is a shredded potato cake (from Switzerland) with some optional sliced onions cooked in with the potatoes (we use onions). We top the potato with smoked salmon and a little white wine sauce. Warm
Grilled Halloumi & Sweet Belles- Halloumi is a cheese from Cyprus that does not get runny. We serve it with sauteed red bell peppers and calamata olives. Warm
Grilled Sea Scallops & Papaya Slaw- like Thai papaya salad but not as spicy topped with grilled scallops. Combo warm cool
Sliced Duck Breast & Couscous Salad- sliced grilled duck breast. Couscous is a grain, cooked and tossed with fine dice of veggies. Cool
Spiced Pork Tenderloin & Mango Jicama Relish- pork is dry rubbed with mixed spices (not too hot, kinda like mild curry) roasted then cooled and sliced.  Mangoes and jicama are diced and seasoned and served on side. Cool
Seared Herbed Rare Tuna & Ratatouille- Tuna seared but raw in middle, coated with herbs from Southern France. Ratatouille on side: bell peppers, eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, onions. Cool
Kobe Meat Balls & Harissa Aioli- garlic mayo spiked a little with touch of red pepper from Northern Africa. Warm

full plates
Beef Tenderloin Medallions Pregos Sauce- Pregos is a sandwich in Portugal with meat and red wine garlic sauce. We took the sauce idea.
Chicken Breast Tagine with Olives and Lemon- Tagine (pronounced tah zheen) is the earthenware the dish is cooked in; it is from Morocco.
Grilled Salmon w/ Coconut Milk and Curry- Thai style curry but milder.
Crisped Slow Cooked Duck on Black Eyed Cassoulet -
Duck confit with black eyed peas, ham, and bacon casserole
Flemish Beef Carbonades – beef braised in beer with onions and mushrooms- it tastes like stew, not beer
Grilled Shrimp with Muamba Sauce- Muamba is a dish from the Congo and neighboring countries- usually made with chicken but can be made with seafood. The sauce is made from palm nuts.
Calamari Caldeirada- a Portuguese stew with tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, garlic, and white wine
Cuban Pork Roast seasoned and cooked with onions and oranges

D magazine:a slice of heavenly French fare, "top french bistro"
Zagat:not to be missed,a little treasure

 excerpts from reviews:
            ------------
Watel's offers one of the more purely enjoyable, reliable dining experiences in the city. Now with 20 years under its belt, Watel's knows better than ever how to deliver pleasure.

Always an understated study in elegance, the dining at Watel's oozes warmth and intimacy. I felt as though I was in someone's well-loved, art-filled, cozy home.

June Naylor THE STAR-TELEGRAM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Observer's Mark Stuertz suggests you "feed your culinary soul" at Watel's, a French restaurant that is one of Dallas' top eateries.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...Fabulous appetizers and entrees were enjoyed...It is a joy to have a chef who understands and celebrates real food's many tastes and textures. Watel's deserves every one of its four stars.
The restaurant is pleasing, with fresh flowers on double-skirted tables and background music played barely above a murmur. Dress is nice casual.
....French bistro with global-fusion accents offers an amazing amount of variety.
The wine list is well-chosen.
... I've always found the waiters to be warm, almost cosseting, without being smothering.

Excerpts from Guide review by-Waltrina Stovall, in Dallas Morning News
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Comfort dominates the cozy dining room graced with art deco accents. Service is uncommonly amiable, caring and personal without seeming the least bit intrusive. The kitchen feels confident enough to vary its mostly classic country French bill of fare with not-so-Gallic dishes as the notion dictates. Pasta and vegetarian dishes, even an occasional Asian accent, and daily specials are also offered.

D Magazine, "top bistro", one of "The 25 Best Restaurants in Dallas"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chef Peeters fare is full of surprises with exceptional sauces and a focus on rare menu items along with standard, but well executed choices. Avant influences are also apparent. Connoisseurs and dabblers alike agree that Watel's is reasonably priced, friendly and elegant without being stuffy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since 1986, Watel's has been the most reliable Dallas spot for refined but not necessarily fussy cuisine. Watel's is both comfortable and elegant, as is Chef-owner Rene Peeters' exquisite food.

June Naylor Rodriguez, Ft Worth Star Telegram
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything about Watel's is engaging, and vigorously so. It is in the top tier of metroplex restaurants and most assuredly occupies the pinnacle of its ilk. Feed your culinary soul at Watel's

Mark Stuertz, Dallas Observer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This amiable restaurant's gustatory delights are worth seeking out .The decor sets a smart scene for its pleasing-as-always fare. Service is caring, the ambience relaxed, and made comfortable by crisp surroundings.

Betty Cook
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
one of the most thoughtful restaurants in North Texas... a highly evolved, fully functioning menu that needs no nips, tucks, or transplants.

Observer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Watel's has been consistently wowing diners with great cuisine for over two decades.

Jim White
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A "little treasure" "elegant but not stuffy", "very good" at "reasonable" , "wonderful surprise", "excellent sauces", "specialties not found other places" , "not to be missed".
